How to Make French Chard and Potato Gratin

French chard and potato gratin is a delicious dish that combines the earthy flavors of Swiss chard with the comforting texture of creamy potatoes. This gratin is an excellent side dish, perfect for family dinners or gatherings. Follow this simple recipe to create your own flavorful French chard and potato gratin.

Ingredients

  • 1 bunch Swiss chard, washed and roughly chopped
  • 3 medium potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1 cup grated Gruyère cheese (or cheese of your choice)
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Grated Parmesan cheese for topping

Instructions

Step 1: Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Greasing a baking dish with a bit of butter will help prevent sticking.

Step 2: Sauté the Vegetables

In a large skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 4-5 minutes. Then, add minced garlic and Swiss chard. Cook until the chard is wilted and tender, about 3-4 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Step 3: Layer the Gratin

In the greased baking dish, begin layering the ingredients. Start with a layer of thinly sliced potatoes, followed by a layer of the sautéed chard mixture. Sprinkle a layer of Gruyère cheese over the chard. Repeat the layers, ending with a final layer of potatoes. Pour the heavy cream evenly over the entire dish.

Step 4: Add Toppings

Top the final layer with additional Gruyère cheese and sprinkle grated Parmesan for an extra cheesy crust.

Step 5: Bake the Gratin

Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and place it in the preheated oven. Bake for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, remove the foil and bake for another 15-20 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the potatoes are tender when pierced with a fork.

Step 6: Let it Rest and Serve

Once out of the oven, let your gratin rest for about 10 minutes before serving. This will help the layers settle and make it easier to cut into portions.

Enjoy Your French Chard and Potato Gratin

French chard and potato gratin is a classic dish that is not only flavorful but also packed with nutrition. Swiss chard provides a wealth of vitamins while the potatoes add heartiness to the meal. Pair this gratin with grilled meats or a fresh salad for a complete and satisfying meal. Whether you're preparing it for a special occasion or enjoying a cozy night in, this dish is sure to impress!
